The first time I met my cousin from Puerto Rico, I was four. She spoke to me in Spanish and I understood every word — I wanted so badly to be her friend. I tried to say “Mami me dio esta muñeca.” What came out was “Tú eres mi mamá.” You are my mom. Her laughter was kind, but even at four, I knew exactly what had gone wrong.
Decades later — a whole career, a whole life — I still understood everything and still froze when it was my turn. So I built the thing I needed: thirty days of writing it down and saying it out loud, until the Spanish I’d carried my whole life started coming out of my mouth. I’m working through this too.
